It's a darkly surreal comic novel, and it works especially well as an audio book.

Oxford's Letters

The Letters of Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford

Read by Derek Jacobi

The life and letters of the Elizabethan courtier, Edward de Vere. The letters are interspersed with biographical information, creating a rich picture of this talented and important figure.

2 CDs £11.99

Derek Jacobi's precise diction is perfect for Oxford. The letters range from one written in French when he was sent away from London because of the plague, when he was 13, to one written on his deathbed. There is also an extract from his translation of 'The Book of the Courtier', poems and beautifully sung madrigals. Joan Walker's calmly modern voice reading the linking narrative provides a nice contrast to Jacobi's elegant enunciation of Oxford's graceful and often wickedly teasing phrases.

The Northumbrian who Saved the Nation

By Andrew Griffin
Read by Gordon Griffin

This is the biography of the man who took over from Nelson at the battle of Trafalgar, and finally won the battle for Britain. He was a model sailor, and a modest hero, who dedicated his life to King and country during the turbulent Georgian period.

4 CDs £14.99

Outwardly he was a cold fish, but the men who served under him praised his fairness and friendliness and loved him as much as his constant companion, his dog Bounce. A good solid book about a good, solid chap.

Tom Brown's Schooldays

By Thomas Hughes
Read by Ian Masters

This is the original 'school story', and the ancestor of the Harry Potter books. This abridged edition concentrates on the exciting adventures of Tom Brown and his school chums, and his battles with the famous bully, Harry Flashman.

4 CDs £14.99
4 cassettes £12.99

Those were the days. Ian Masters's avuncular Mr Chips-reading beautifully captures the changing moods of mischief, muscular Christianity and the serious business of educating young men. The philosophy may be outdated, but it's still a cracking good story.
